This summer joy is FREE! Here’s where to find it

June 6, 2026

When I was a kid, summer wasn’t about expensive vacations, amusement parks, or having my parents constantly entertain me. My mom would load some friends and me into the car and take us to a local lake where we swam and spent the day in the sunshine. We’d spend the morning in the water, and we’d stay until after lunch because my mom packed sandwiches and snacks from home. No admission fees, no fancy activities. Just sunshine, water, and a bunch of kids having a blast.

The rest of the time? We were outside. We ran around the neighborhood with our friends, made up games, put on ridiculous plays using a box of old clothes as costumes, and even created our own little carnivals and fairs complete with homemade games. We had to use our imaginations and create the fun. Nobody was curating an experience for us. Nobody was handing us a screen.

It’s a powerful reminder that, even as an adult, the best summers don’t come from spending more money—they come from being more intentional about how you spend your time. The moments that stay with us aren’t usually the expensive ones; they’re the afternoons filled with laughter, adventure, connection, and a little creativity. Happiness has far less to do with your budget than it does your perspective. That said, summer isn’t defined by your destination—it’s defined by your willingness to embrace the season and make the most of where you are.

So, here’s where my creativity starts. I love playing tourist in my own hometown. Most of us drive past interesting places every day without ever stopping. Historic districts, public gardens, art installations, scenic overlooks, local museums, and quirky roadside attractions often sit right under our noses. Challenge yourself to explore one new place each week this summer. You might be surprised by what you’ve been missing.

One of my favorite concepts is the staycation. Instead of wishing you were somewhere else, create an experience that feels special right where you are. Take a few days off work if possible, unplug from responsibilities, and intentionally treat your hometown like a vacation destination. Eat somewhere new, visit local attractions, and spend your days doing things you normally wouldn’t make time for.

Another thing I encourage people to do is explore nearby towns and cities. You don’t need to fly across the country to experience something new. Drive thirty minutes, an hour, or even two hours away and spend the day exploring somewhere unfamiliar. New restaurants, shops, parks, and local attractions can make a simple day trip feel like an adventure.

You can also transform your home into a summer retreat. Set up outdoor seating, string lights across your patio, play tropical music, and create an environment that feels different from the rest of the year. Sometimes a few small changes can make your backyard feel like a resort. Slip on a pair of flip flops, and boom, you’re feeling the summertime vibes.

Summer is also the perfect excuse to bring people together. Some of my favorite summer memories involve simple gatherings with friends. Set up a movie night in the backyard using a projector and a white sheet. Bring lawn chairs, snacks, and cold drinks. The experience feels special even though it costs almost nothing.

If you have kids—or you’re just a kid at heart—turn your backyard into a mini water park. Sprinklers, water balloons, slip-and-slides, kiddie pools, and squirt guns can provide hours of entertainment. The laughter alone is worth the effort.

One of the easiest ways to inject happiness into your summer is to get outside. Nature is one of the most powerful mood boosters available, and it’s completely free. Whether it’s a local walking trail, a nearby lake, a neighborhood park, or a mountain overlook, spending time outdoors reconnects you with something bigger than your daily routine. The fresh air, sunshine, and movement can completely change your outlook.

Summer is also festival season. Farmers markets, outdoor concerts, craft fairs, food festivals, art walks, and community celebrations happen all over the country. Many of these events are free or very inexpensive. These summer events give you a chance to experience your community, meet people, and enjoy the energy that summer naturally brings.

One thing I love doing is creating little personal adventures. Make a list of things that represent summer where you live and challenge yourself to find them all. Maybe it’s a sunflower field, an ice cream stand, a local waterfall, a baseball game, a hidden trail, or a spectacular sunset spot. Turning summer into a scavenger hunt adds excitement to ordinary days.

Food is another huge part of the summer experience. Some of my favorite memories are tied to simple meals shared with people I care about. Fire up the grill, experiment with fresh seasonal ingredients, and create meals that feel celebratory. Food has a way of turning an ordinary evening into something memorable.

And don’t forget the beverages. Summer is the season of lemonade, iced tea, fruit-infused water, smoothies, mocktails, and frozen treats. Creating fun seasonal drinks can make even a regular afternoon feel like a mini vacation.

One thing I’ve learned is that happiness often comes from anticipation. Give yourself things to look forward to throughout the season. Schedule a sunset picnic, a weekend hike, a movie night, a day trip, or a backyard gathering. Having events on the calendar creates excitement long before they happen.

The biggest mistake people make is waiting for happiness to arrive. They think they’ll be happy when they take a vacation, buy something new, or achieve a goal. But happiness is usually found in the small moments happening right in front of us: a warm evening, conversation with a friend, beautiful sunset, or a walk through a local park. These moments are available to almost everyone.

This summer, I challenge you to slow down and intentionally embrace the season. Soak up the sunshine. Explore your surroundings. Create experiences instead of collecting possessions. Laugh more, worry less, and remember that some of the best memories you’ll ever make won’t cost much at all. Summer isn’t about how much money you spend—it’s about how fully you choose to live.

One haircut does not lock you into one look. The real difference comes from how you style it. With the right products, you can shift your hair from clean and controlled to messy and textured or full and voluminous without ever touching the clippers again. A lightweight spray builds natural movement, a cream adds shape and control, and a powder pushes volume and separation for a more lived-in finish.

Same haircut, completely different energy depending on how you style it that day!
