12 Items Men Should NEVER {Cheap Out} On

January 21, 2025
For certain purchases, a man can go cheap, like white t-shirts. Whether or not they’re cheap or expensive, white tees will get stained. Pit stains are inevitable, and they will wear out eventually. They’ll get stretched out, and you’ll toss them in a year.

On the other hand, there are other items that you should never go cheap on. Here’s my analysis of when to go cheap versus when to invest in more expensive items.

Which should you choose — the cheap or expensive?

  1. Shoes — (a) Running shoes. You don’t want to opt for cheap shoes if you’re an athlete. They need to be built well, and your feet are super important. If you’re a runner or an athlete, you must upgrade and invest in quality footwear. (b) Leather shoes and boots. Choose the highest quality you can afford. Higher quality will last longer and look better, giving you more value and bang for your buck.
  2. Underwear. Nice underwear feels better, fits better, and makes you look sexier.
  3. Suits. If you go too high, the product may not be superior. Suit Supply makes the best suit for the money in terms of quality and styling. If you wear a cheap suit like from JoS. A. Bank or Macy’s, the quality and look will not be as good.
  4. Denim. I’ve worn premium and cheap jeans, and cheap jeans are just as good and fit just as fine. They will last longer, too, because higher quality denim has a lot of stretch, and the more stretch will be prone to wearing out quicker. Cheaper jeans that are 100% cotton will last longer even though they’re less expensive.
  5. Watches. Go cheap with watches because so many amazingly badass brands are super affordable, look amazing, and are badass.
  6. Bedding. Never go cheap with your mattress, pillowcases, sheets, duvet, or comforter. You will sleep better and more deeply.
  7. Skincare. Don’t go cheap with skincare. More premium skin care can equate to a higher price, but there’s not necessarily a correlation. Tiege Hanley is super premium and high quality, but the price is affordable. It’s also highly effective.
  8. Hair products. Don’t go cheap with your hair products. Upgrade to a higher quality. You don’t want cheap products with damaging toxins, parabens, sulfates, and alcohol. Your hair will look better and perform better with quality hair products, and you’ll also be much happier.
  9. Grooming products. Use a deodorant that does not wreak havoc on your body. For instance, cheap deodorants from the drugstore clog sweat ducts, build up toxins in the lymph system, and reduce testosterone levels. Choose a natural deodorant like Pete & Pedro’s.
  10. Fitness equipment. Specifically, treadmills and ellipticals built for commercial use are of higher quality. The ones you find at Walmart, Target, and Dick’s Sporting Goods are very cheap, low quality, and not a solid investment. Choose quality and sturdy equipment that lasts longer.
  11. Fitness memberships. A more expensive membership offers a better experience with better equipment. As a result, you will enjoy what you’re doing.
  12. Pets. Adopt! There are a lot of loving and wonderful pets out there who need homes.
  13. Insurance. You should invest in good insurance, whether for your health, car, house, or apartment. You never know when you’ll need it, and it’s worth it.
  14. Sunglasses. You can find glasses that won’t break the bank. Some of the most expensive brands, like Tom Ford, are the biggest rip-offs.
  15. Food. Invest in higher quality, organic food, especially regarding meat.
