12 Popular Grooming Tools That Totally SUCK {IMO}

December 10, 2024
Every well-groomed gentleman needs grooming tools to look amazing. Tweezers are a must, as is a good nose hair-trimming tool. You also need a perfect beard and body grooming tool. I love Brio.

On the other hand, some products are a massive waste of money. Either they’re not needed, or they don’t work well.

Don’t even bother with these.

  1. Manscape trimmers. I don’t think they’re ‘bad’ products, but you don’t need them. They’re a waste of money, especially if you own something like a Brio beard grooming tool, because you can also use it on the rest of your body. The lights on a manscape trimmer are useless. You can take them in the shower, but they’re not very effective, and the blades are cheap. The skin-safe technology is bullsh^t. The blade is dropped lower than the top rake, which is not skin-safe. Also, never use anything motorized on your testicles. Yes, you can take the length down, but when making them smooth, you need a razor.
  2. Crazy razors. You don’t need a razor with 18+ blades that vibrate, sonic action, or heat up. Having that many blades is bad for your skin, especially if you suffer from breakouts, blemishes, or ingrown hairs. A single-blade Bic is what you should be using if you have ingrown hairs or burns. The Gillette, with two blades and a lubricating strip, is a superior razor.
  3. Manual nose hair trimmer. It’s an OG men’s grooming tool. It rips hairs out of your nose, and it’s trash.
  4. Tools with attachments and tools that claim to do many things don’t do anything well. A tool with all the bells and whistles won’t be quality. The Brio Beardscape is the best grooming tool that does what it’s supposed to—trim hair. It doesn’t try to be something it’s not. Get a FREE Zero-Blade with the purchase of a Beardscape.
  5. Three-in-one tools. Your hair will look much better if you buy a proper hair-cutting set rather than using a beard grooming tool. The Braun three-in-one claims to do a little of everything, including trimming your hair. It doesn’t work. Invest in a quality tool designed for the job that you want it to do.
  6. Nose hair trimming tool. It doesn’t work that well and isn’t that powerful or sharp.
  7. Eyebrow tool. I recommend avoiding any tool with a guide when doing your eyebrows. Eyebrow hair needs more attention to detail, requiring a small comb, scissors, and a mirror.
  8. OneBlade. This razor has many attachments and doesn’t do any one thing exceptionally well.
  9. Electric face brush. I used to use one of these because I didn’t know better. I thought I needed to scrub my face to remove dirt and oil that had built up. Scrubbing your face damages the skin by being overly aggressive and overly exfoliating. Instead, use a high-quality base wash in the shower or at the sink, and then gently remove grime with your fingertips and warm water.
  10. Blackhead suction devices. There are many ways to remove blackheads, but you should avoid suction devices. They can potentially damage your skin. Opt for the Biore strips and use them about once a month. If you wash your face twice daily, you’ll be good to go, and gunk shouldn’t build back up. Overusing the strips also isn’t good; you don’t need to use these strips if your pores aren’t clogged.
  11. Micro-needling derma rollers are a waste of money. They may help stimulate facial hair growth by bringing more collagen and blood to the surface and follicle, but the reviews are mixed on the results.
  12. Beard templates. I find these ridiculous. They’re plastic devices you put on your face to help follow along and add your beard. They’re the dumbest thing, in my opinion. It’s not that complicated.
