You don’t need to spend a ton of money to look stylish, elevated, and expensive.
The outfit I’m wearing cost me just $42—the pants were $20 from Banana Republic Factory, and the sweater was $22 from Old Navy. The secret isn’t necessarily how much you spend; it’s knowing what to buy, how things should fit, and how to combine and style inexpensive pieces so the entire outfit looks more premium.
Fit, footwear, accessories, color choices, styling, grooming, and attention to detail can transform inexpensive clothing into an outfit that looks incredibly polished and high-end. Spend strategically, focus on the details, and you can look like a million bucks without spending anywhere close to it.
Here are my tricks for making cheap clothes look expensive
1. Upgrade the visual anchors. Your shoes, watch, glasses, and belt are some of the first things people notice. You can wear an inexpensive T-shirt and jeans, but pairing them with quality shoes and accessories instantly elevates the entire outfit.
2. Go monochromatic. Wearing similar shades or colors on the top and bottom is one of my favorite style tricks. It elongates your body and gives you that classic, sophisticated, old-money aesthetic without requiring expensive clothing.
3. Avoid shiny synthetic fabrics. Cheap synthetic materials that reflect light can instantly make clothing look inexpensive. Instead, choose natural-looking materials like cotton, wool, suede, and leather for a richer, more premium look.
4. Upgrade your footwear. Shoes can make or break an outfit. A great pair of minimal leather sneakers, loafers, or suede shoes can make even cheap jeans and a basic T-shirt look significantly more expensive.
5. Get the fit and proportions right. If you remember nothing else, remember this. Fit is everything. A $10 shirt that fits your body properly can look better than a $100 shirt that doesn’t. Spend a little on tailoring when you need to. I bought a pair of chinos for around $20 and spent another $20 having them tailored. For $40, I ended up with pants that fit perfectly and looked much more expensive than they were.
6. Build a better body. No matter what you spend on clothing, being in shape improves how clothes hang and fit. Broad shoulders, a proportional waist, and a fit physique can make even inexpensive clothing look better.
7. Eliminate cheap-looking logos. Logos and obvious branding draw attention to the brand and can immediately reveal what you’re wearing. Clean, logo-free clothing tends to look more sophisticated and timeless.
8. Choose solid colors over busy patterns. Simple solid colors are easier to mix and match and generally create a cleaner, more elevated aesthetic than loud patterns.
9. Choose softer, muted colors. Bright reds, blues, greens, yellows, and other loud colors can make inexpensive clothing look even cheaper. I prefer colors like off-white, tan, navy, maroon, olive green, light blue, and other muted earth tones. They tend to look richer and more premium.
10. Style your clothes intentionally. Knowing how to wear something matters almost as much as the clothing itself. Learn how to roll your sleeves properly, leave a couple of shirt buttons undone, and make small styling adjustments that give your outfit a more effortless, sophisticated appearance.
11. Tuck in your shirt. Something as simple as tucking in your shirt can instantly make an outfit look cleaner and more premium. Just make sure your belt is in good condition. Even better, pants with side adjusters instead of belt loops can create an especially elevated look.
12. Don’t neglect your grooming. You can wear expensive clothing and still look sloppy if your grooming is terrible. On the flip side, inexpensive clothing looks dramatically better when your hair is styled, your facial hair is trimmed and edged, your nails are clean, and you smell amazing with a great fragrance.
